In 1996 two Japanese research facilities, Biomedical Research Laboratories of Takara Shuzo and Research Institute for Glycotechnology Advancement discovered that U-fucoidan, existent in the brown seaweed Laminaria japonica, causes various types of established malignant cell lines to self-destruct. The mechanism by which the self-destruction occurs, known as apoptosis, exists in cells from their initial formation. This mechanism, once activated, acts as a clean-up process for the body's harmful cells. Thus when a body suffering from abnormal and uncontrolled cell division detects the presence U-fucoidan, it naturally begins the process of apoptosis and rids itself of the damaging cells.
